THG Insurance x Claude

What's buried on page 84.

How a coastal insurance agency uses Claude to read 150-page policies in minutes, build proposals in five, and catch what others miss.

A homeowners association came to THG Insurance with a $60 million question. It had competing insurance policies on the table and wanted to know exactly how they differed.

Commercial policies like these run 150 pages or more. Comparing two or three of them used to mean a full day, sometimes a week, of reading line by line. This time, THG gave the policies to Claude.

In a couple of minutes, Claude came back with an itemized list of the differences, pros, and cons. That matters, because the details that decide a claim are rarely on page one. One policy might cover wind-driven rain up to the full limit, while another caps it at a fraction, with the difference buried deep in the fine print.

"That's buried on page 84 of the policy. If we miss that, shame on us. But Claude doesn't."

Chad Huneycutt, CEO, THG Insurance

Out-local the big guys.

When Chad Huneycutt started in the business, he met face to face with most of his clients every year. Technology changed that. It let THG serve far more people than one office ever could, and grow faster than Chad had imagined.

"Our goal was to out-local the big guys," he says, "but still make the customer feel like we had all the bells and whistles of a large organization."

On the coast, that promise gets tested. Not every insurer wants to cover coastal property, and the ones that do may not next year. As an independent agency, THG works with 50 different carriers, so it can move clients when the market shifts. But that only works if the team can move fast.

"Sometimes someone gives us 60 or 90 days' notice," Chad says. "But a lot of times it's a fire drill. My policy renews in a week and I need you to present me some other proposals."

"I don't know if I'm smart enough for this."

That was Chad's first reaction to Claude. He brought in Setanta to find THG's biggest bottlenecks and set Claude up around them, starting with his own work.

"Claude meets you where you are," he says. "Once I spent some time with it, my comfort level grew very quickly. It's something I use throughout the day now."

The harder part was the team. With so much fear about AI in the news, Chad made one thing clear from day one.

"This is a tool to make you better. This isn't a tool to replace you."

Ten tools, one Claude.

For years, every new problem at THG meant another piece of software. One for ACORD forms, the standard applications sent to carriers. One for researching a company. One for finding out when a commercial building's roof was last replaced.

"Now through Claude, we're able to take what 10 software products were doing and condense it into one," Chad says. "Not only are our lives a lot more manageable, it's made us a lot more efficient."

What it looks like on the front line.

Chad's message to his team landed. Commercial Director Brewer Knox now uses Claude, in his words, "religiously."

Proposals used to be the biggest drain on his week. Each one took about an hour and a half. "I used to dread them," he says. "I used to not send them." With a Claude project loaded with THG's past proposals, he now builds one in about five minutes, and sends three to five a week.

The quality stands out, too. When one proposal reached the board of a coastal condo tower, the property manager and board president told him they had never seen one like it. THG won the account.

"We're the small guy on the block," Brewer says, "competing with USI and Marsh and all these national companies." Claude helps THG look every bit as polished.

Where Claude works at THG today

  • Policy comparisons. Side-by-side reviews of 150-page policies, with every difference, pro, and con.
  • Renewal fire drills. Confident proposals when a client's policy renews in days.
  • Proposals. Consistent, on-brand proposals built from past work in about five minutes.
  • Research and forms. Company research, property details, and ACORD forms in one place.

Working on the business, not in it.

Chad used to work with 20 browser tabs open. Now it's a couple, plus Claude. The time he's won back goes to two things: developing his team, and planning where THG goes next.

"Most days you're so busy with little tasks, you rarely find the time to ask where you want the agency to be in a year, or how many people you need to hire," he says. "It's freed me up to work on the business instead of just in the business every day."

The same is true across the team. Brewer uses his extra time to build prospect lists and write call scripts for newer reps, who used to learn by sitting in on his calls.

THG isn't using Claude to cut jobs. It's using Claude to grow. Chad expects to keep scaling at the same pace over the next six months without adding payroll. And his advice to any owner feeling intimidated is simple: "Just give it a chance. It's there to help us."
