Metal fabricators

AI for metal fabricators, on the RFQs, drawings and shop paperwork.

Claude helps metal fabricators read RFQs and drawings into a standard intake sheet, find similar past jobs and draft quotes that an estimator reviews and prices. It also tidies the paperwork that follows a win. We have no fabricator client yet, and the Operating Diagnostic tells you whether it fits your shop.

Buyer question

How can a fabricator get through RFQs faster?

Claude reads the RFQ email and its attachments, lists the parts, quantities, materials, finishes and due dates, and notes what is missing, such as a drawing revision or an unstated tolerance. The estimator starts from that sheet instead of a pile of attachments, and asks the customer about the gaps.

An RFQ rarely arrives complete. The email says one thing, the drawing another, and a spreadsheet adds a third quantity. Claude puts the three side by side and marks the disagreements.

Modern Machine Shop's 2026 Top Shops survey reports that shops that turn quotes around within a day report a 51% win rate on new business, against 41% for shops that take longer (source). It is a survey of machine shops and a correlation. We did not measure it, and we do not claim it as a Setanta result.

Buyer question

Can AI read fabrication drawings?

It can read the text on a drawing: title block, notes, material callouts, tolerances and revision. It reads geometry less reliably, so a person confirms dimensions and any bend, weld or finish detail that drives labor. We would treat Claude's reading as a first pass and have it say where it is unsure.

PDF drawings and emailed spreadsheets are the usual starting point. CAD files such as STEP or DXF are harder, and what is practical depends on your own files. We would test on a sample of your real RFQs in the Diagnostic before suggesting anything.

Where Claude is unsure, it should say so in the intake sheet and not fill a field with a plausible number. That behavior is something we set up and check, and we would show you examples from your own drawings.

Buyer question

How does similar-job lookup work for fabrication estimating?

Claude searches your past quotes and completed jobs for parts like the new one, matching on material, process, size and quantity, and shows what those jobs took and what you quoted. The estimator uses them as a reference, adjusts for today's conditions and sets the price.

Many shops keep this knowledge in a few experienced heads and a folder of old quotes nobody can search. A similar-job lookup makes the folder usable by the second estimator as well as the first.

The lookup is only as good as the records behind it. If past quotes never recorded what the job actually took, Claude can show what was quoted but not what happened. We would say that early, because it decides what to fix first. The RFQ guide covers this in more detail.

Buyer question

What shop paperwork can Claude take on after a win?

From the won quote and the purchase order, Claude can draft the order acknowledgement, a first routing based on similar jobs, material purchase requests and a checklist of the customer's certificate requirements. The shop lead reviews each document before it moves, and anything that disagrees with the purchase order is flagged.

This is the reading and re-typing that happens between a signed order and the first cut. Each document is small. Together they eat a day of someone's week, and a typo in one of them tends to surface on the floor.

Nothing here changes how you schedule or price work. Claude prepares drafts from documents you already have, and your people decide what goes ahead.

What stays with your people

Claude drafts. A person decides.

  • Pricing, margin and which jobs to take stay with the estimator and the owner
  • Decisions on forming, welding and finishing stay with qualified people
  • Any weld procedure or code compliance sign-off stays with the person certified to give it
  • Customer relationships and negotiation stay with your sales and shop leads

Where a mistake would cost money or a customer, a named person reviews the output before it leaves the building. We set up every workflow that way and write down who reviews what.

What we know and what we do not

No client here yet. The Diagnostic tells you if it fits.

Setanta has no published client among metal fabricators, and we do not claim one. Shops differ in software, in the drawings customers send and in how much of their history is written down. The Diagnostic looks at your own RFQs before any scope is written.

Our one published client story is THG Insurance, an independent agency in Wilmington, NC. It shows the pattern we look for: paperwork that sits between a person and a decision, with Claude put on the reading. The free Operating Diagnostic is where we find out whether your business has that pattern.

That parts, service and rental fleet work is on AI for equipment dealers.

Questions

More questions from owners in this industry.

Does Claude replace the estimator?

No. Claude does the reading and the searching. The estimator reviews the assumptions, adjusts for today's material and machine load, and approves the price. We turn down any brief that is really about replacing a person, because the estimator's judgment is what the shop sells.

Does this work with the shop software we already run?

It depends on the system and on how its data can be reached. Many workflows start with exports and documents you already have. The Diagnostic looks at what your system allows, and we say plainly where a workflow is practical and where it is not.

Do you have metal fabricator clients?

No. Setanta's one published client story is THG Insurance in Wilmington, NC. This page describes what we would build, and the free Operating Diagnostic tells you whether it fits before you commit to anything.

What is the free Operating Diagnostic?

A free call (book a time) that looks at how your team works today. It finds where Claude would move your numbers first and the process worth fixing first, and says which package fits. If it is not the right time, we say so.
